Nintendo Wii Therapy

Nintendo Wii Therapy

TBCI uses a Nintendo Wii gaming system as part of the day treatment program. The Wii system is used by both physical and occupational therapy along with the psychologist to address a variety of goals. Using the motion sensitive remote control to activate the gaming system while engaged in a sporting task allows the client to coordinate motor movements with mental stimulation. The sport games included on the system include bowling, tennis, golf, baseball, and boxing. These challenge the client to engage in motor movements similar to actually playing the game but also require a variety of cognitive processes as well in order to be successful.

Goals that can be addressed by the Wii gaming system include strength, endurance, balance, frustration tolerance, cognitive flexibility, problem solving, bilateral coordination, manipulation and dexterity, processing speed, accuracy, attention to task, sequencing, and peer interaction. The gaming system allows the clients to engage in a therapeutic activity while also involving leisure and social skill development.
